Five things you need to know about the BMW 7-Series

Discover the key features of the highly desirable BMW 7 Series in our helpful guide.

Traditional executive cars might not enjoy the hierarchy they once did, but there’s still a demand for the best seats in the house among the world’s executive bottoms. And they don’t come more substantial than the latest big Beemer.

It has a very, very large radiator grille!

One thing you notice straight away about the latest BMW 7-Series is that it has an absolutely massive nose. Yes, that kidney grille is BMW’s biggest ever and there’s no mistaking its presence. You’ll either love it or hate it, but the main reason it’s there is because of demand from wealthy Chinese customers for increasingly more visible BMW branding – and it doesn’t come more visible than this!

Some models only seat four

It might be a gargantuan car, but the 7-Series isn’t always a five-seater. Go for the ‘Lounge’ option and it’s a four-seater only, but those rear armchairs are supremely comfortable, multi-adjustable and wouldn’t be out of place in a first-class aeroplane cabin, which is most likely another place where their owners might choose to spend time.

You can have petrol, diesel or hybrid

There are two 3.0-litre diesels – the 730d with 282bhp and the 740d with 335bhp, with mild hybrid technology adding an extra 11bhp at the rear wheels.

Petrol options are varied – from a 328bhp 3.0-litre V6 in the 740i via a 528bhp 4.4-litre V8 in the 750i, and topping off with a sensational 577bhp 6.6-litre V12 in the M760Li.

Finally, the 745e plays the plug-in hybrid card, combining a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and battery, and up to 28 miles of EV power.

It’s either rear or four-wheel-drive

7-Series buyers can choose between a traditional rear-drive layout or an all-wheel-drive model badged as xDrive.

Both are fine handling set-ups, the advantage of the all-wheel-drive model not being so much its grip in bends as its traction off the mark – typically, xDrive models are half a second faster to 60mph than the rear-drive models.

There are some incredible options

The options list for the 7-Series looks like a gift catalogue for the person who has everything.

So how about scented, purified air, massaging and ventilated seats, and laminated glass that regulates the interior temperature and adds soundproofing. You can have a telly or removable tablets if you like, and if parallel parking’s not your thing you can even get out and park the car by remote control.
