Five things you need to know about the BMW X5

Discover the key features of one of the most luxurious SUVs - the BMW X5.

The BMW X5 has been with us in one form or another for over 20 years now, so the brand is well established in the luxury SUV market. But today it faces more competition than ever before, which means it has to be very, very good indeed. It is.

It’s semi-autonomous

The latest X5 is stacked to the brim with tech, a large amount of it safety related.

All models come with pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, automated emergency braking, adaptive pivoting LED headlights, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

But the really cool option is its advanced semi-autonomous driving mode. The technology is there to essentially make it self-driving, but not until legislation allows.

There’s an M version!

The range-topping X5 is the M50i, inspired by BMW’s legendary M Performance division. It’s a fabulous car, with a thundering 550bhp 4.4-litre V8 under its bonnet and smart styling cues, including giant 22-inch wheels.

There are more sensible options, too, with six cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines capable of delivering decent performance.

There’s a special off-road option

All X5s are four-wheel-drive, but if you’re serious about going off the beaten track there’s an xOffroad package that will help you take the rough with the smooth.

It has three settings aside from standard. xSand for loose, unsurfaced or soft surfaces, xGravel for the more countrified roads, which also raises the ride height by 20mm, or xRocks for tricky terrain, where the suspension raises itself by 40mm.

You can get a plug-in version

If you want to keep your company car tax down or meet stricter emissions criteria then BMW offers a plug-in X5 in the form of the xDrive45e which has an EV range in the region of 50 miles – ideal for most commutes. It couples an 11.2 kWh battery with a 3.0-litre petrol engine to deliver over 300bhp yet attracts a BIK tax rating of just 7%. Clever stuff.

It will find you a parking space

With its Connected Navigation, the X5’s party trick is to find you somewhere to park when you’re in need of a space. The system identifies traffic levels and popularity of key areas, and will automatically take you to where it knows you’ll find somewhere to park it up.
