The New BMW 1 Series Is Here
The new BMW 1 Series is here. As the latest generation BMWs come to the fore, one notable absentee from the refreshed lineup was that of the 1 Series. However, this has all changed as the German marque took the wraps off of the latest generation machine this week.
A hatchback hero, the BMW 1 Series has been a staple of the BMW range for several years now and provides customers with a direct competitor to the likes of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf.
Of late BMW has invested considerable sums into its research and development departments alongside embarking on a new design direction. The result of this expenditure has produced potent results and clear winners of the recent overhaul are the all-new BMW 3 Series and BMW X5.
Featuring an all-new design language and fresh interiors, BMW has moved the whole range forward considerably against the face of new competition. The new 1-Series joins this lineup and looks to capitalise at a time when BMW is very much on form.
So what of the new model? The 1 Series has always been a popular and capable hatchback. Featuring a premium badge, the BMW 1 Series was well built and offered a range of both petrol and diesel powertrains and came in rear wheel drive configuration.
With the new 1 Series, BMW has given the new model more than just a mere facelift. Everything here is new, both inside and out and this extends to the powertrain.
It’s clear BMW have taken their time on this car. They state it’s the culmination of more than five years worth of work and when you consider the extent of the refresh, it’s hard not to believe that. Let's start with the visuals, of which these changes are majorly striking.
Gone are the more box-like appearance and in, is all new lines and curves. A sleeker profile, the new 1 Series is a major departure to that of its predecessor and the visual changes bring in a much-needed refresh to lift the 1 Series into a more sporting bracket. It’s clear that BMW has looked to Mercedes and their successful reincarnation of the A-Class. To the side and rear, both vehicles look very similar, right up to details on the rear apron.
Further around the front, you have the latest BMW grille which features the larger dual kidney setup. This larger grille nestles itself within the revised front apron and links the new lines to the sides and rear.
Inside you’ll find the latest in BMW interior design and infotainment systems. Everything here is new and helps to lift this model right up to date.
Clearly the new 1 Series has a lot going for it, however, one major bone of contention for fans of the BMW 1 Series is the loss of its acclaimed rear wheel drive configuration. Gone is power delivery at the rear and in, is a front wheel drive setup.
Whilst how this affects the car dynamically remains to be seen but BMW stresses that they’ve managed to retain the driving dynamics of this popular hatch and with the car going on sale soon it won’t be long until we find out.
