The Volkswagen Arteon
Sometimes at Big Motoring World, news slips under the radar, which with this particular car I'm not sure it should have.
Introducing the new Volkswagen set to take over from the CC, the Volkswagen Arteon. The Arteon looks nothing like any other Volkswagen. It will sit above the Passat in Volkswagens line up, and will rival the BMW 4 series and Audi A5 Sportback.
Having never been a fan of the Passat and having to learn to like the CC, this is not a car I had to learn to love, its impossibly good looks have thrown me. It certainly isn’t what you would expect to come from Volkswagen. They have taken their styling up a notch and made something very interesting and very refreshing.
Volkswagen have said it will come with a "highly expressive, horizontally accentuated brand look." In real terms, it has a larger front grille, LED headlights and taillights, and a more aggressive and sporty body.
Underneath, this car is a Passat, most of the interior comes straight out of a Passat, but unlike the CC it isn’t just a pretty Passat. It’s something completely new.
Not only good looking, the Arteon is practical as well, 50mm longer than the CC, with a boot that can hold up to 1700 litres of luggage with the rear seats folded and more legroom too. I expect the Arteon to have the same capability and reliability of every other Volkswagen.
So, great looks, practicality, what else?
The Arteon will be the first Volkswagen to get the all-new seven speed DSG Gearbox, and will come either front wheel or four-wheel drive. Two trim levels will be available – Elegance and R-Line. If you choose to go for the R-Line you will not only get the chrome lower trim from the Elegance, you will also get chrome exhaust tips, 18-inch wheels and special R-Line bumpers.
Inside, there is a good cabin space and standard you will get an infotainment system with eight speakers, air conditioning, keyless start and a leather multifunction steering wheel with paddle shift. Or you can opt for Volkswagen’s Digital Cockpit as well as heads-up display and a 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with gesture control.
