Five things you need to know about the Audi SQ7
Sporty SUVs are a big thing these days, and they don’t come much bigger than the Audi SQ7. Based on the Q7 SUV, the hot model is as much about performance as it is about presence.
It’s a V8 – but not a V8
Under the bonnet, the SQ7 has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, allied to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
But it’s not always a V8. Instead it uses Audi’s patented ‘Cylinder On Demand’ technology to drop four of its cylinders when cruising or in gentle driving, helping to improve overall economy and reduce emissions.
It is supercar fast
The SQ7’s engine is a mighty thing – it develops a whopping 504bhp and 770Nm of torque. That’s a lot of clout, and it’s delivered in a sensational manner. 0-60mph takes just 3.8 seconds if you give it the beans, and that’s as fast as quite a few supercars. It sounds terrific, too.
It has rear-wheel steering
In order to keep its phenomenal power in check, the SQ7 uses adaptive air suspension that gives it surprising agility for such a large vehicle. But its real secret is its passive rear-wheel-steering, which adjusts the position of the rear tyres in hard cornering to help bring the back round in line with the front, via the quattro all-wheel-drive system.
It’s a full seven-seater
While it competes against the likes of the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and Range Rover Sport, the SQ7 has a trump card all of its own in the form of an extra row of rear seats.
So if you need to move six passengers from one place to another very quickly, there’s no other car that can do the job.
It’s more affordable than you think
A price tag just shy of £80k might sound a lot, but when compared against its key rivals the SQ7 actually represents pretty good value. To spec a Range Rover Sport up to the same level you’d be looking at a price north of £100,000, a Porsche Cayenne in similar spec would be well over £90k.
