The New Audi A8

Audi prologue 3

This morning at the Big Motoring World office, we got chatting about the traffic on the morning commute. Think back to the last time you were stuck in traffic on the motorway, creeping along at 10mph. How would you fancy letting your car take over so you could sit back and relax? That's exactly what the new Audi A8 is offering you the ability to do!

Sounds a little frightening, but rest assured, you are in safe hands, Audi are reported to have made the decision to take responsibility for any incidents when the car is in self-driving mode. They seem to have a lot of faith in their new tech! Usually, that means we should too. The system will operate up to 37mph in congested motorway traffic or 60km/h, which doesn’t sound too fast, but I’m certain it will feel a lot faster when your hands are off the wheel and your feet off the pedals. I don’t know about you but I’m going to let someone else try it out first!

A new in-car screen has been developed with help of aviation experts to clearly alert the driver which mode the car is in.
The new system will use a camera to monitor the driver, and is able to pull the car and alert emergency services, should anything go wrong. This very clever function will come into play if the driver falls ill at the wheel or, for some reason, climbed out of the driver's seat (we suggest you do not try to test that one out though).

The ‘Traffic Jam Assist’ function isn’t all the A8 has to offer. Along with this pretty cool new feature, the A8 will offer a Park Assist function, the driver will be able to step out of the car and use an app on their smartphone to park. A great feature if like me you are bad at judging how much room you have from behind the wheel, or if you fancy taking control of your own giant remote control car. There will also be a new artificial intelligence system that will be able to learn and predict drivers’ behaviour. Although details are not all available yet I expect it will learn regular destinations and auto input them into the sat-nav when the driver starts heading in that direction.

With Audi's traditional good looks and the choice of diesel, petrol or hybrid versions this may be a car worth waiting for!

Expected to go on sale early 2018, if the thought of letting your car drive itself is quite daunting, maybe check out our range of used Audi cars instead.
