DS AUTOMOBILES DS 4
Introduction
The second generation DS 4 compact premium hatch deserved more recognition than it got.

For us, this might be the most distinctive and potentially the most interesting car of its kind in this part of the market from the 2021-2025 period.

There are sharp looks, a stand-out cabin - and there was the option of clever damping technology too.

PHEV engine tech's there if you want it and all the powertrains are efficient.

In short, there's lots to like if you don't mind the premium pricing.

History
Back in 2021, the Stellantis Group's DS premium brand had yet to gain much traction in the UK.

But wanted that to change, with this car, the second generation DS 4. A quick DS history to start with.

The brand launched in stand-alone form in 2015, mostly re-badging sportier Citroens until it could launch its own design, the DS 7 Crossback SUV, in 2017.

Since then, we've had the first generation DS 4 model, which sold between 2015 and 2019 and which almost nobody bought.

Then the small but rather curious-looking DS 3 Crossback.

Followed then by the even rarer DS 9 upper mid-sized saloon.

Nothing though, to really get people talking.

But this second generation DS 4 did. Surprisingly, DS decided not to make a slightly larger compact SUV than the DS 3 Crossback.

Which meant that this DS 4, though really a compact premium hatch taking on the Audi A3 Sportback, the BMW 1 Series and the Mercedes A-Class, had also to try and appeal to people who might have wanted a compact premium SUV like, say, an Audi Q3, a BMW X1 or a Mercedes GLA.

That was a lot to ask and this model struggled to deliver.

A 1.2 Hybrid (non-plug-in) version arrived in 2024.

The DS 4 model was updated in 2025 and re-named the DS No4.

Here, we look at the 2021-2025-era DS 4 models.
What You Get
DS hopes that the look of this car will sell it to you - and for sure it'll stand out in the supermarket car park.

At first glance, you might be undecided as to whether this is a premium compact hatch or a premium small SUV - and that's entirely intentional because it can be both. The conventional version is supposed to look luxuriously premium.

Or sporty if you opt for the 'Performance Line'-trimmed variants, designated by a gloss black front grille and black upper window surrounds.

The alternative is the SUV-inspired 'Cross' version, which gets crossover cues like front and rear skid plates and roof bars, also gaining side skirts and black bumpers.

Get comfortable in the so-called 'Digital Seamless Cockpit', it's all very plush, twinkling displays seem to surround you and there's a level of stylised design that DS hoped would ensure this model's admission to the premium segment.

Your passengers may well gaze around in wonder at what DS calls 'Clous de Paris guilloche' finishing, complemented by cabin materials that, depending on variant, can include pearl-stitched leather, Alcantara, forged carbon and wood.

The DS 4's 'fully digital' cabin is normally made up of no fewer than three displays.

There's a 10-inch screen replacing conventional dials in the instrument cluster.

And an HD infotainment display of the same size in the centre of the dash for media and navigation.

This is controlled by a third 5-inch screen further down the centre stack known as the 'DS Smart Touch'.

If that's not enough screen tech for you, it was also possible for original owners to specify Night Vision: and the segment's cleverest head-up display, claimed to be closer to augmented reality than any other system.

Another interesting touch was the lack of visible air vents; the main ventilation unit is integrated behind and strip of physical switches that sit just below the main control screen.

The seats are particularly comfortable.

And there's plenty of stowage space too.

The swept-back roof line doesn't do much for rear seat access, but the aperture remains tall and wide enough for relatively easy access and for parents to lean in and strap down their offspring.

Once you're inside at the rear, it's a big improvement on the dark, cramped coal hole that was the back seat of the first generation DS 4, a model so compromised at the back that rear folk couldn't even open their windows.

There's none of that nonsense here, but even by the modest standards of the class, legroom will remain somewhat on the cramped side should there be someone of similar size seated ahead of you.

Headroom's fine though - even with the optional sunroof fitted - and there's plenty of premium finishing to distract your attention if you're feeling a touch squashed.

Raise the tailgate (which could be had in powered remote-opening form) and once you've negotiated the relatively high, impractically-covered loading lip, you'll be faced with a decently-sized 430-litre boot - though this total falls to 390-litres with the E-TENSE PHEV variant.
What You Pay
Prices start from around £12,900 (around £15,100 retail), which gets you a 1.2 PureTech 'Performance Line'-spec model on a '21-plate.

The same spec car on a '21-plate with the 1.5 BlueHDi diesel engine values from around £13,450 (around £15,650 retail).

The E-TENSE petrol PHEV values in 'Performance Line'-spec on a'21-plate from around £14,000 (around £16,150 retail).

The rare 1.2 Hybrid non-plug-in version that arrived in 2024 values from around £16,000 (around £18,150 retail0 in 'Pallas' form.

What to Look For
You'll need to buy carefully but the use of common Peugeot and Citroen parts means that reliability shouldn't be any worse than models from those brands.

There have been various instances of electric glitches, especially with the infotainment system (central screen freezing and failure), so check that all the functions work as they should.

We've also heard of reports of the main dashboard crashing, causing temporary loss of the speedometer, petrol gauge and climate controls. With the petrol E-TENSE PHEV drivetrain, there have been charging and electrical issues, sometimes requiring 12V battery replacement or causing 'Energy Fault' messages.

Otherwise, it's just the usual things.

Check the alloys for scratches, the interior for child damage and require a fully-stamped service history.
Replacement Parts
(approx based on a 2022 DS 4 E-Tense - Ex Vat) An air filter is in the £8-£15 bracket.

A front brake pad set sits in the £23 bracket for after-market pads; think more like £125-£185 for genuine approved parts.

A front brake disc sits in the £63 bracket for after-market discs; think more like £249-£345 for genuine approved parts.

Wiper blades from a dealer will cost you £50-£60 each.

Cabin air filters are in the £15-£30 bracket.
On the Road
Most of the DS 4's engineering is familiar from rival Stellantis Peugeot and Vauxhall models in this segment from this era, but DS embellished it with extra tech features like Active Scan Suspension and Night Vision.

Engine-wise, there's a 130hp 1.5-litre BlueHDi 130 diesel for those still addicted to the black pump, but the bulk of the range was based around three conventional PureTech petrol units, a three cylinder 1.2-litre turbo with 130hp; and two 1.6-litre powerplants, with either 180 or 225hp.

The further E-TENSE Plug-in Hybrid 225 model uses that 1.6-litre PureTech unit too, but mates it to mated to a 108bhp electric motor powered by a 12.4kWh battery for a combined output of 225hp and an electric driving range of up to 38.5 miles.

The E-TENSE is rated at 232.3mpg on the combined cycle and up to 27g/km of CO2.

A 136hp 1.2 Hybrid (non-plug-in) petrol version was introduced in 2024.
Overall
Given that the DS brand struggled to make this second generation DS 4 work, it's hard to see much of a future for the marque.

This car did, after all, tick all the current boxes for market growth, tapping into the buoyant segment for premium badged compact hatches and simultaneously appealing to SUV folk.

The trick for the Gallic marketeers here lay in convincing customers that despite its shared Stellantis Group engineering parentage, this was a credible premium design in its own right, something the first generation DS 4 clearly wasn't. They didn't manage to do that but on the used market this replacement car deserves a second chance from those who might have rejected its predecessor - or, more likely, failed to even notice its existence.

It has the kind of pavement presence a rival BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 Sportback or Mercedes A-Class noticeably lacks unless very expensively embellished.

And there's some cutting-edge technology here that you just can't get with those cars.

FAQs
What do I need to bring with me to buy a car?
To test drive and buy a car, you’ll need to bring your driving license. Should you decide to also fund your purchase with one of our lenders, you may also require a secondary form of ID, such as a passport.
How do I reserve a car?
Easily reserve one of our cars online or over the phone with a £99 deposit. We will place a temporary £99 hold on your credit or debit card. This isn’t a charge—just a security measure to secure your reservation. The temporary hold is automatically released after five working days. Your reservation will hold the car for three full days, giving you enough time to come in for a viewing. Please note that you can only reserve a vehicle once. You can also reserve a car in our dealership by placing a non-refundable £500 deposit. In-store deposits must be paid by debit card, as we’re unable to accept cash. This will secure the car for collection.
Do your cars come with a warranty, and if so what does this cover?
Since we’re big on peace of mind, we provide a 90-day warranty on all of our cars. This does not affect your statutory rights. You even have the choice to purchase an extended warranty from us to make sure you’re covered for longer if anything was to go wrong. These include 1, 2, or 3-year warranty plans. You’ll be pleased to know that our warranty covers both all major mechanical and electrical components in case of a sudden mechanical breakdown. Parts and labor are also included. Under our warranty, you’ll have coverage for the engine, gearbox, transmissions, and suspension as well as smaller items such as electric windows and central locking.
How do I get my car valued?
You can use our online valuation tool to receive an instant, no-obligation valuation. Once you have completed this, you will receive your valuation by email so you have all the details ready for when you visit us. Once you visit our dealership, you will receive your final valuation quote once your vehicle has been inspected by our appraisal team.
Why should I sell or part exchange with Big Motoring World?
There are several reasons why selling or part exchanging your car with us would be ideal. Firstly, it is an extremely efficient and fast process, taking the hassle out of selling privately and dealing with tyre kickers. We will also offer you our best price guaranteed, providing a competitive valuation that is hard to beat.
Can I drive away on the same day in a car I’ve just purchased?
Yes, you can. All of our vehicles are ready to drive away. If you are applying for finance, however, you will need to be on-site by 3 pm in order to take the car the same day.
